"…I'd like to reach a point where I no longer bullshit myself. I think that's the natural human condition - to lie to yourself. Because the truth is painful."
-Dustin Hoffman
I have been witnessing all these candle peace rallies...which have become such a fashion after every terrorist attack and are projected by electronic media as if it's going to change everything. And if people like me refuse to be part of it we are made to feel like "traitors". My only logic for not joining such a rally was that in a tense situation such rallies put extra pressure on the police forces to provide additional security when their men are trying to concentrate on investigation. But anyways thousands of people still gathered on evening of 3rd December near the Gate Way on India to show "their anger" and "unity" (I don't exactly know though who were they showing this off to and why?)…but how serious they were was seen in the way everyone was laughing, joking, walking casually and clicking snaps of the places where people had died few days back. And not very far from this place, at CST, a five kg bomb was recovered same day…what if it had gone up? These same people would have again blamed the police. Finally, Mumbai police had to put a ban on such rallies for next two weeks for security reasons. Then, I wonder who are these people who had gathered there as I could still see trains crowded with same old faces of the Aam Aadmis. Autowalas and taxiwalas were complaining about traffic jams due to these rallies and common man in hurry to reach home after a hard day at work also looked unhappy with all this. If one looks at these rallies carefully he/she will find that large part of this crowd us of people belonging to elite class (according to an autowala "people who have no serious work to do"), NGOs, celebrities and youth (may be same youth who gets caught in parties taking drugs, who drinks and drives and runs his car over people, who beats up policemen…and whose general knowledge about this nation is below average and who has seen Rang De Basanti for than couple of times but has missed the real message). And looking at the planks they are holding clearly suggest no one has any idea what exactly they expect from these rallies…if one of it read "We want Peace" other said "Go for War"…I am very sure whoever was holding that "Go for War" plank has no one in his/her family who is in arm forces. Anyways believing they have done something revolutionary they all went back home. What were left behind were all those banners and planks dirtying the roads and lot of melted wax. No news camera covers what is left behind…because hard truth doesn't sell. They want us to believe we have won because we have killed ten terrorists so what if we lost 200 innocent lives plus now we have shown our anger and unity. They want us to believe that smsing that "we want change" and lighting up a candle will change this country. They want us to blame politician, police and every agency possible because selling such anger is easy. What they will never tell us that we are part of the system, we are the system and we all have failed completely, that first we have to be an aware, responsible and honest citizen and then ask questions to others. I don't even know how long this anger in people will last. And as soon as some peace returns everyone will go back to their normal lives and these news channels will return to same old criminal and superstitious shows. Actually on star news second most important news after the Mumbai attack was that MS Dhoni didn't go for his graduation exam. I don't even find it funny now.
We want change but are we ready for change? It's a war like situation, we need harder rules and laws but I wonder we will follow them when we find it hard to follow simple rules and laws. We don't co-operate police in anyways, we don't have respect for policemen and we want them to stand for us. We think all the politicians are corrupt but we don't want to be part of the politics. Forget about being part of it, we don't even follow what's happening in politics. I have always believed that this country doesn't need revolution to change but it's time for self realization for every individual and to ask how responsible I am myself.
PS-I am 25 years old and I am not very proud of the fact that we are the youngest country in world as I see that my generation has clearly lost the way. The Generation before us brought this country so far, I don't know where we are taking it. As somebody told me "We are losing "EAST" and we don't have "WEST". I believe India has a "magic" about it which no other nation has but if we loose it I don't know what identity I will have as an Indian after few years. I am angry, frustrated but I still want to rise up and walk and try to change whatever I can by being little more responsible and little more aware and wish everyone does the same…am I asking too much…am I a traitor?

Listen sumit..i went thru ur blog..i respect ur ideas..its good tat u r aware..but wat r u angry upon..u want us to join politics!! do u really kno 25 yrs is d minimum age for it?? im just 23..so somethin which i can do is "vote"..but tel me a single honest politician whom i can rely upon..u think vilashrao was really apt to be d CM of MH? u think shivraj patil was worth as d central home minister..they moved out only coz people have shown unity n anger thru media..today, media n internet are d only sources to reach thousands of people at a time..(wat u call spreadin awareness)
just tel me one thin..suppose u goin to office n few MNS workers come n beat u just coz u r a non-MH..wat u gona do?? wat's d best can u do..apart frm being responsible n sincere 2wards nation?
n imagine d same situation infront of media?? dont u think u can raise ur voice n take it up to a national level if media supports u? n only if u stand united with people u r safe..u try to walk alone n make a change..politicians r gona eat u up before u start(n its reality, its not tat m coward)..
one more thing..u cant stop people frm boozin..but u can stop them frm drink n drive..isnt it??
d point is u cant go n change 100 billion people..but wat u can really do is tighten up d law which enforces everyone to follow it..so wat u really need to change is d administration part..n 2des administration is really poor..its not worth supporting these politicians..it time v go n join poilitics ourself..but before tat v have to kick these politicians out frm d way..or else put a fear in their heart tat v r together n v can stand against u if u cross limits..
no body is callin u a traitor buddy..even i called many of my frens on 3rd..few came n few dint..but i dint said a single word for those who were not there..
its all abt perception.."wat u call congestion in a train becomes atmosphere in a night club"..
so i do wat i feel is correct..but i dont raise fingers on others..u do it ur way..ill support u netime u want..but its better u stop discouraging and pin-pointing others..
I don't know if u agree to me or disagree to me...
See...when u say all politician are corrupt that's a wrong perception...this country is running well on different levels...so that means there are people working for us...it's medias responsibility to bring some of those people in limelight...make people believe in the system...but as i read some where "good news is no news"...so we are made to believe everyone is corrupt...
If u think CM and Home minster went out bcoz of public anger...i can't say much...bcoz it's just a political gimmick...
And I am certainly not pin pointing u or discouraging people like u...but like u made a general statement that all politician are corrupt...i am giving a general perception of such rallies i have...
Harder rules will have to be made...but it's my responsibility as an individual too that I follow some of them without a policeman standing on my head...
Media will not take my voice anywhere...bcoz i guess first thing in this country has to change is news channels...they are most irresponsible bunch...
U r also blaming administrative system and politicians...
My point is very simple..what has this rally changes...what was the issues discussed there...we see it after every attack...nothing changes...why...bcoz when things go normal...we all forget it
I was thinking of filing a petition against news channels...but neither i has money nor resources...but when i came to know that Vishal Dadlani has done it...i made sure i get in touch with those people and support them...
http://smallchange.in/
that's the link to that petition...
I have not written this to get into some blame game..but so that we all can rethink and say are we really changing things...
See...i can't overlook the way people generally behave in these rallies..i wrote what i saw...
You are upset bcoz u think i am blaming the crowd u were part of...but then i am not blaming everyone...and if u look around...u will find i have few points which i need to agree
also check this

yaar sumit..tel me one thing..u call this an action?? petition against media?
I agree tat few news channel are really bad n sud be banned or converted into commercial channels..but how can u simply say tat v are all victims of media gimmick..
if you r so much concerned abt d "good n real news" why dint u guyz went inside CST, TAJ to take some pics n create a better report..there r ways to distribute such reports to people(like thru mails n blogs)..
u cant deny d fact tat media persons have really put their life on stake to keep people like us informed abt "WATS HAPPENING"..it has helped alot to avoid panic..a person panics when he/she is not informed abt d problems n situations. everyone was aware abt d situation in mumbai just coz media was working day n night..i agree tat their were false news..but at d end people were well informed abt everythin.. n there are some real good news channels..wateva TRP it may have..n people like us follow them for sure
one more thing..its coz of media tat u came to kno abt 5kg RDX in cst at 3rd Dec..isnt it?? dont u think it makes u also a victim of media gimmick? Who knows its a real news or not..coz i was their n 1.5 lakhs people were there..no one witnessed a bomb squad their..CST was open for all..whr did u got this news frm?
now i dont say all politicians are corrupt..
but i must say few have d capability to take india to much higher level..but just coz of their self-centered nature they aint doin it..few are really honest but they dont have d real capability to make progress..
Now just coz of d balance between talented but corrupt n honest but incompetent politicians v r moving in a steady way with some blimps..
n every educated individual is aware abt his/her responsibilty..but their is a 60% population which is uneducated..the rally atleast showed tat v have a strength of people who r ready to devote their time n talent for nation..it was unplanned but not Ineffective..at least v have managed to put pressure on govt. to take action..
U sud have come to rally with proper planning n raised ur point..u cud have directly reached more than 1 lakh people without ne media n mails..tat wud have been d real action..isnt it? even if 1000people wud have agreed with u..u cud have had d opportunity n support to do wat u r doin here on blogs..
I say it again tat i kno u r really concerned abt nation..but u looking at only one aspect..U can add me on orkut..Just keep touch n v can surely work out somethin better n productive than debating with each other :) take care dost
See...i should make one thing clear...this blog is not an attempt to reach people...it's a place where i express myself...if someone reads it...very good...but i don't think sms and mails change people...
When people say they showed something in this rally...my point is whom did we show it?...i saw autowalas complaining about it...i see same common man not very happy with blocked roads...
Practically speaking I can't come and speak to a crowd like this...it's not logical...so I first look at my resources...and then see what i can do...i made a film on how news media functions...that's one way i try to reach as many people as i can...I also know as my resources increase I will do more things...
U r saying I am looking at one aspect...u r doing the same...u were honestly there with a concern...ok..that doesn't mean others had same concerns...i cld see people walking casually, joking, clicking snaps...i am saying what I saw...
Showing what happened inside CST or Taj doesn't changes anything...it's just sensationalize...Naval cheif was very disappointed with the news channels bcoz later on the recorded phone conversation between terrorists and people who were giving them commands showed that how what news channels were reporting was helping them and therefore it prolonged the operation...i ahve no problem if u spread awareness...but no need to show urself brave and present live pictures
When u say 60% population which is uneducated...i agree to it..and that's my concern...we need to some how reach those people...news channels are best medium...but they are too busy playing TRP games...so there has to be censorship on them...only good news channel NDTV hardly has any TRP...
Supreme Court and media are two most powerful systems in this country...Supreme Court has always worked...u need to do something to media...plus these idots have even showed sometime like they make supreme court work...like they projected in Jessica Lal murder case...they created an illusion like it was bcoz of them supreme court gave the justice...
I mean daily people die in north east...no news channel covers it...bcoz it requires research and affords...
I did a documentary on women working in Naxalite area of UP and MP...no news channel ever went there....these women have inspiring stories...they have changed things in their area...those are real heroes...
Things can't change in a day...that's frustrating but fact is we need to do something legal...
Politician are still accountable to some extend..media is not...our effort is to make them answerable to us...they projected one of the dead Taj employ as terrorist...news was false...they never apologise...media can carry our voice anywhere and make sure follow it till justice happen without thinking about TRPS...so u need to understand why I have such a bigger problem with news channel...u question one politician...u will have 100 camera around us...u question one news channel...nobody will ever come to know...it's a difficult battle
Arre yaar sumit..We both r concerned abt change n action..u think media is misleading d youth..i feel atleast d educated youth is smart enuf to perceive rite msg frm media..
but questioning n fighting against media wont help at all..its again an administration issue..why is our gov. so inept tat a common man has to come down n put petition against d channels?? Its not abt supporting police n politicians..its time to get united n change d bureaucrats...
Now lets come to d point of ur concern..u wana kno whom v were questioning in d rally..well v were not questioning nebdy..tats a mis-conception..it was just an eye-opener for everybdy tat v r united n v have to fight together for our rights..it was just to put some fear n pressure on the gov to take action..it was to show d Indian soldiers tat they r not fighting for deaf n dumb people..tat v heartily owe them our freedom..u think common man got effected by this? I strongly dis-agree dis..everyone was aware abt 3rd dec rally..they left their office early..n traffic?? which traffic u talkin abt..d major traffic was b'win regal n fort..its hardly 10 mins walk..infact people were happy to be a part of rally..n it was a gr8 support from every part of society..every religion, every cast..it was somethin which neva hppnd in past many years in MH..people forgot abt their internal fights(like MNS vs Bhaiya) n came down united..dont u think its a good sign for our country?? n u still asking abt d end result of rally..try to see d positive outcomes dost..
U saw (on news channel :P)people were lafin n chatting there?? does tat mean people r not concerned? i saw how much n how many of us were concerned..i saw d dedication of d crowd..may be u were a part of media gimmick again :P isnt it??
u said these people wil forget everythin in next 1 month..
leme tel u..after 1 month even u wudnt be writing blogs on mumbai attack..but does tat mean u r not concerned? v always keep our concerns in heart..n wait for d rite time to act..u cant just stand on a normal day n start fighting against corruption(wat u call v dont do nethin on normal peace days)..u always need a basis,a background for every revolution..v have one in our hand rite now..country has suffered..so why not keep this fire enlighten in everybdy's heart..i wud suggest more rallys, get together..more discussions..lets come up with a consolidate plan n innovative ideas to improve d nation n then start implementing it..
i support ur views..u r making an attempt in country's favour..tats really gr8..v need it at this point f time.but u c im not tryin to find flaws in ur ways..
their are so many movies on corruption, bravery, awareness, which get published on a large scale..do u think it changes d mentality of people?? But still no one is doubting abt ur way..coz even a small step in countries favor is always welcomed..
now u tell me ur question "wat has this rally changed" make sense??
Like u even v r doing it for betterment..just d ways r different..
to change people u have to be one among them..if u really have a point.. come to get-together's n rally's..raise it infront of everybody..u want to reach un-educated people..no issues buddy..v wil start campaigns..n u cant do it without medias attention..if u really want to take it up to national level..u gota take their help..Tell me u still have any doubts abt 3rd dec rally? :)
How can i doubt something I don't believe in...
I am not trying to prove 100 thousand people wrong...I am saying I don't agree to it...bcoz I have my reasons which are practically visible to me.
I know our goals are same...but my way is different...i don't have enough support, resources or results to show why I think I have chosen this way...but i am working towards it...
Films don't change people...but it's a way to communicate for me...to put an idea forward and to stand along with it...i can't use news channels which have no ethics to spread my voice...so I will find a way...and I know there are people who believe in this way...
I am happy that people like u are honestly thinking of working towards a change...I hope we will work together at some level someday...but don't expect me to light a candle or join a rally...if i think time is not right...
I guess there is satire in my writing and it should not be taken literally...try and find a meaning...best of luck...god bless u
